Artist’s Statement
“The essential problem in painting is to place the figure in space.” Francis Bacon
Over the course of my life as a painter I have wrestled with Bacon’s challenge and proceed with each painting as if it is an early rehearsal for the some future more developed painting. In the early years, I worked as a figurative painter --mostly from life-- because the human eye is stereoscopic while the photographic lens is monoscopic. In my more recent abstract painting, I have attacked a shallow field of painted space and explored the psychic weave of paint forms crashing against each other.
